She hadn’t planned to linger in the market, but the scent stopped her mid-step. Warm pumpkin folded into brown sugar, the air curling with cream and spice. Somewhere nearby, a kettle sang, and the steam rose like a love letter written in black pepper and clove. Cinnamon drifted in next, as familiar as a hand finding hers in the chill, coaxing her toward a lantern-lit stall tucked between barrels of apples and baskets of late harvest squash. The vendor met her with a knowing smile, pouring slowly, as if the ritual itself held the secret to autumn. The porcelain cup was warm against her palms, the rising steam painting her cheeks with heat. Vanilla bloomed on her tongue, soft and lingering, while the spice curled into her chest like a memory she hadn’t lived yet. The market faded, the world hushed, and in that quiet moment, with the season just beginning, she took the first sip...
and it tasted like forever.
